Local Golf Courses
Central Florida has rightly earned a reputation for some of the finest golf courses in the world. We have played many of the courses, and would recommend two as being excellent courses for differing standards of players. In addition to our recommendations, we detail other courses we have played in the area which we found challenging, but did not consider to be as good as our recommendations.

We receive no payment for these recommendations - and no commission from the courses. We simply wish to share our experiences with others that may visit the area. The enjoyment of a golf course is a very personal thing - you may not like the same courses that we recommend - but we hope this will give you a starting point on your golfing holiday. Share your views of these, or other, courses with us.

Diamondback 18th Hole

DIAMONDBACK

This is an extremely challenging course in the central area. It is located about 25 miles from the villas, and is well worth the drive if you are a low handicap golfer. It has the most challenging opening holes of any course we have played. The local guidebooks suggest that this is not a course to hit your driver, as it is very tight. It is, however, a long course, and the temptation remains to blast away off the tee. Do not consider a driver unless you are confident that you will play straight and long. I played my driver off the first, and hit the trees that intrude down the right. I gave up my driver and hit a 3-wood for the rest of the round. It meant I was hitting a lot of long approaches, but at least I was on the fairway (most of the time).

The greens are fast but in excellent condition. It has occasional water hazards, but not at every hole. The biggest problem is the swampland. There are areas that are fenced off on some of the fairways. The starter advises you not to think about looking for a ball lost in these areas, as the gators and snakes may get you first. We thought he was joking, but having lost a ball in the swamp we did not dare ignore the advice. The fenced areas make accuracy (not just straight hitting) a premium on this course, but it is a beautiful course to play.

The green fees are expensive - about $60 per round - but they include the obligatory buggy to transport you and your clubs around the course. The clubhouse is reputed to serve excellent meals, although we confess that we have yet to sample them.

To get to Diamondback, drive due south on Highway 27 for approx. 20 miles, and then turn left. The turn is well signposted for both Diamondback and the neighbouring Grenelefe courses. Drive along this road for approx. 5 miles, and Diamondback is on the left. It is best to book rounds in advance.

KINGS RIDGE

This is a much closer, and much easier, course. It is situated about 8 miles from the villas, and is within a retirement (or "adult") community on Highway 27. It is an open course, with a little water but light rough and few trees. The biggest hazards are the neighbouring houses. There is something a little disconcerting about standing over a tee shot while being watched by people swimming in their pools! It is also worrying that a stray shot may finish in their gardens.

The course begins in an open area with a couple of easy par 4's. As the round progresses, you start to weave in and out of the rows of houses, with some greens only a few yards from the buildings. It is, however, mostly flat and open, and would be ideal for a high handicap player or a beginner. The course is kept in good condition, with the obligatory fast greens. A good player should easily play under his handicap, especially on the back nine that is quite short, and plays even shorter.

The green fees are reasonable - about $25 - $30 - and again include the hire of the buggy. We could not find a clubhouse, and the pro shop was poorly stocked, but don't let that detract from the enjoyment of this delightful little course.

To get to Kings Ridge, drive north on Highway 27 for approx. 8 miles. The community is on the right. It is a gated community, but if you tell the guard that you are there to play golf, there is no problem in gaining access. Once through the gate, take the first road on the left, and the pro shop is next to the car park on the right hand side. You must dress appropriately i.e. no T-shirts or short shorts (it states no shorter than 4 inches above the knee, but nobody measured!) and only soft spikes are allowed on the course.

OTHERS

There are hundreds of other courses in the vicinity, but these are our favourites. Others worthy of a mention, which we also liked, are Celebration (the centrepiece of the Disney-made town of Celebration), Grenelefe, Orange Lake and, of course, the Disney courses, of which Lake Buena Vista is probably the best.

Celebration is situated off the 192. To get there from the villas, travel 2 miles south on Highway 27, take the 192 east towards Kissimmee for approx. 3 miles and Celebration is on the right hand side. Once in the community, follow the signs for the golf course. While there, check out the lovely properties bordering the fairways – they sell for over 1 million dollars each!

Grenelefe has 3 courses to play, and is situated directly opposite Diamondback. Just follow the directions above to find it. At 7,300 yards, the West course is tough, and was designed by Robert Trent Jones. The last three holes are a real challenge. It is listed by “Golf Monthly” as one of the Golfing Gems of Florida.

Orange Lake is situated on the 192. Travel 2 miles down Highway 27, turn east on 192 and continue for about 2 miles until coming to the course on the left. It is located on a timeshare development, and despite the poor reputation of such communities it is actually a nice course. You are a bit too close to the 192 on some holes, which may deter some novices, but don’t be put off as the courses are challenging and awe-inspiring.

The Disney courses are all located on the Disney property. At the last count, there were 99 holes (5 full and 1 half course) on the resort, and all are of the highest standard. We prefer Magnolia, but this is probably because of the mouse-shaped bunkers. Oak Trail is a nine hole course designed for families, and is an easy course for a novice. The others are all high quality courses and are very challenging.
